Local Economics

local_economics_smallWe want to support the local economy by buying from local companies and farmers wherever and whenever possible. Paying a proper price keeps local companies in business, sustaining local jobs. Farming maintains our landscape, and the pastoral beauty is one of the things that locals and visitors love about Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.

If we all buy local food and produce we are encouraging local businesses to collaborate and build more locally based, self-reliant food economies,  These in turn and by definition will more sustainable food production, processing, distribution, and consumption such that it will become integrated into the local economic and encourage better environmental and social health practices.  It makes sense, BUY LOCAL!

Our products
Hand made
Our jams, chutneys, marmalades and condiments are made carefully by hand in open pans in small batches. Despite pressure over the years to change our production methods, we have always believed that cooking preserves in open pans produces a better flavour and texture.
Fresh ingredients
Our preserves are made from fresh, naturally dried or fresh frozen ingredients and we have resisted the temptation to cut corners by using tinned, concentrated or pulped fruit and vegetables. We source as much locally as possible, doing our small bit to support local farmers and growers, and cutting back on food miles.
No additives
We add no artificial colourings, flavourings or preservatives to our products and do not use modified starches to thicken our chutneys. We use a small amount of apple pectin in a few products where the natural pectin content of the fruit is low or variable. This helps maintain quality by reducing the risk of caramelisation.
Gluten free
We use no wheat or modified starch in our preserves, so our products are suitable for most people on a gluten-free diet. However, we do use malt vinegar in some of our non organic chutneys so would recommend our Organic Chutneys where cider vinegar is used for those intolerant to the small amount of gluten present in malt.
GMO free
To the best of our knowledge, none of our products contain Genetically Modified Organisms and all our suppliers assure us that they do not support the use of GMOs in the crop production.
Vegetarian
Most of our products are suitable for vegetarians and many are suitable for vegans.
Organic
We introduced our Organic Range in 1998 and are licensed by the Soil Association. We work within the strict guidelines set down by the Soil Association standards to ensure that all ingredients are bought from growers and importers who are registered with an approved organic certification body.

fresh_veg_smallOur product range changes regularly, depending on what’s in season locally. Buying food when its in season locally means that its fresher, and fresher food tastes better and contains more goodness.   You won’t find year-round availability of specialities that should be seasonal treats, courgettes, chilli's, tomatoes, beetroot. Going back to cooking seasonally can be hard at first, but we’ve got lots of recipe ideas get your mouth watering.  We source as much locally as possible, doing our small bit to support local farmers and growers, also getting the freshest produce possible and cutting back on food miles.
